WHAT IS THE PROPER WAY OF STORING AND PREPARING THE SPRAYERS AND MIST BLOWERS FOR WINTER?

At the end of each spraying season, your sprayers and mist blowers should be stored properly and prepared for winter. By doing this correctly, you will ensure a long service life of your machine. Read the article below to find out what to look out for.

WHAT IS THE PROPER WAY OF STORING AND PREPARING THE SPRAYERS AND MIST BLOWERS FOR WINTER?

THE SPRAYING MACHINE SHOULD BE THOROUGHLY CLEANED

The machine should be thoroughly cleaned after each spraying. The easiest way to use the residual spray is to dilute it with water and pass it through the nozzles again. Its concentration rate should be at least 10% (10 units of water per unit of the spraying agent), the driving speed slightly higher and, if possible, the pressure should be lower (1.5 bar, depending on the nozzle). An additional rinsing tank is recommended for this procedure.

Afterward, you should thoroughly clean the sprayer from the outside and inside, including all the tools used during spraying. Do not forget to clean the tractor as well. Use detergents prescribed by the manufacturers of protective coatings. If the instructions for using the spray were supplied with instructions for cleaning after spraying, follow these instructions.

Besides regular cleaning after use, it is also important that the machine is cleaned at the end of the season and prepared for winter.

Cleaning at the end of the season consists of filling the tank with clean water, starting the pump and opening all the valves to let the water flow through.

When you finish cleaning the machine, drain the tank completely and then pour at least 10 l of antifreeze (mixed with water) into the tank and run the pump. Open all the valves on the regulator so that the antifreeze mixture reaches the pipes and nozzles.

Finally, drain the remaining mixture from the tank into a container and leave the pump running for a few more minutes until the excess mixture in the system is pumped into the container.

CHECK THE FRAME AND VITAL COMPONENTS OF THE MACHINE

Some sprays contain solvents that could damage the paint of the frame. Hence, the sprayer should be carefully inspected, removing any rust from the parts with damaged paint and applying a new coating.

You should also check for tubes for tightness and replace them with new ones, if necessary.

Special attention should be paid to the pressure regulator, which must be protected from moisture and dust.

It is recommended to lubricate all moving parts with WD-40 or oil. The pump must be thoroughly cleaned from the outside and inside. Check the number of operating hours, check the machine for proper operation and, if necessary, carry out maintenance work (change the oil, diaphragms, seals, etc.). If you notice any defects, perform the relevant operations to remedy them. If you are not skilled in such repairs, we recommend that you leave them to an authorized service technician.

It is also very important to check the condition of the PTO shaft. Always make sure that the safety pin on the head of the PTO shaft is clean and lubricated. If necessary, replace the sliding protection plates and the safety pin to ensure safe operation.

Other vital parts, such as filter cartridges, the strainer and other accessories, should also be cleaned and inspected. These parts should be replaced as needed. Drain residual water from the elements such as suction filters and three-way valves and remove any residues.

Grease all the folding and sliding parts of the sprayer. To perform these operations, drain all the water from the pump, regulator, pipes, filters and other elements, and keep the sprayer in a warm place.

Protect the pressure gauge against freezing by unscrewing it from the regulator and storing it in a warm place. The pressure gauge must be stored in an upright position to prevent the leakage of glycerine filling.

Storing the sprayer/mist blower We recommend that you store your sprayer /mist blower in a covered area to prevent damage to the machine from winter conditions.

A proper preparation of the sprayer before winter is a very important task. When spraying is resumed in the spring, the sprayer will be ready for use in no time.
